I don't get it (or, why *is* a contract-free iPhone a good idea?)
Of course, right after I just purchased my iPhone I hear that it is now being offered by AT&T and Apple contract-free, provided you actually spend more money than it would take to otherwise purchase an iPhone "legitimately" and subsequently break your two-year contract (scroll down a bit on the page to see the math).

Aside from the thrill I guess from "sticking it to the man", is there really any advantage to owning a "contract-free" iPhone? Sure, I *suppose* within two years you might get stiffed so hard by AT&T that you just have to switch to Alltel, but at that point the extra $175 might not seem like that bad of a trade-off if you just can't stand to stay with your current carrier for the remaining months you have left. And it's not like you can just take your phone with you to Verizon; iPhones are still locked into the AT&T network and its 3G system, so you will be dealing with AT&T whether you like it or not.

Sure, maybe you won't have a set bill to pay every much and you literally only pay for what you use (I have no idea if this is really the case, this just seems like the most logical conclusion to me). I can imagine rates for telephone calls and text messaging to be as high as they could possibly be as you're out of contract. Sure, you may only need your phone for emergencies, but in that case wouldn't it just be a hell of a lot cheaper simply to purchase a GO phone (or similar pre-paid device) and an iPod Touch for your music/PDA/portable WiFi needs? A 32GB iPod Touch is less expensive than a 16GB iPhone 3G even if you take the "shady" route of breaking the contract as soon as you get the phone, and aside from the loss of camera and phone functionality is virtually identical (I actually have both a Touch and an iPhone, though in my case as a musician and student dual-ownership really ISN'T redundant).

Am I missing something painfully obvious? Or is this really just a publicity stunt by Apple to try to convert more of the brain-dead masses to its phone?

    BTW
I saw a bass saxophone for the first time last night...it was in an electro-acoustic piece featuring two each of soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones, and ONE BASS SAXOPHONE. And very subtle synthesized sounds enhancing the extended techniques already being performed by the saxes.

No one calls me Mad Dog. I hate that name.
I am five pages into a 10 page minimum paper due in two days.

What's sad is that the maximum is 20 pages, and I might go over it after finding out that it has to be *double* spaced.

That's the way it always seems to go for me. I either struggle to hit the minimum requirement because I really don't have much to say on the topic or I am so into it that I have to condense what I want to say. Grr..

Found this text in the music library today
    Title: 日本の音樂

    First chapter:

    第一章: 日本音樂とは何ぞや

    今日に於て「日本音樂とは何ぞ」といふ問題を一言にて斷定することは非常に困難のやうである。

I'm surprised the Allen Music Library has something like this! This'll be fun! :D

    Dear Apple
MacBook Pros don't need to look like MacBook Airs. Thanks for making the most attractive Macintosh portable look tacky.

A twist on Palin's unique "relationship" with Russia
So we've all heard how Alaska's proximity to Russia makes Palin a "foreign policy expert" since she can allegedly "see" Russia from where she lives in Alaska, but considering that Alaska was once part of Russia, couldn't you also make the argument that perhaps she's KGB in disguise?

    How music majors practice
Step 1 - Find an open practice room.
Step 2 - Dump personal belongings in said room.
Step 3 - Leave room and shut door.
Step 4 - Congregate in the main hallway and gossip with friends for an hour.
Step 5 - Return to room and play through your material once or twice (three times if unfamiliar with the piece or struggling).
Step 6 - Take a break and return to the hallway for another hour or so.
Step 7 - Repeat at least two or three times in a day.
Step 8 - Brag to your friends about how you practice for four hours or more a day.

And, just so you know, there is absolutely no way I am bitter for not finding an open practice room at 9AM. No way at all!

What kind of Volkswagen are you?
After all, since Volkswagen is the "People's Car", there's one for everybody!

New Beetle - Hippie girl who wishes to express her conformance to her "non-conformist" lifestyle

Rabbit - Sensible gentleman who cares about gas economy, reliability, and performance for a sensible price.

    GTI - LOLOL 2 FAST 2 FURRIOUS 4 YUO!!1 +TURBOE

Jetta - Insecure, trendy, brain-dead girl with daddy issues who has to drive something sporty and European but whose parents won't buy her a Mercedes.

Passat - New budding twenty-something hotshot who can't quite afford a Beamer yet but who still flaunts his European tendencies.

Touareg - Trendy soccer mom who hates the environment and whose husband wasn't going to splurge twenty grand more for a Porsche Cayenne.

Touran - Less trendy soccer moms who hate the environment less but who still don't want to be seen in a Chrysler.

Phaeton - Despite actually seeing one on the streets of Tallahassee, I really have no fucking idea who would buy this car. Probably why it's been discontinued.

    Hanna diverting to Cuba?
Hrm...will it be simply a brief excursion to the island nation before curving back around again to hit the US, or will it head elsewhere, to Mexico perhaps?
